Police Auxiliary Service

The Police Auxiliary Service (PAS) uses non-uniformed civilian volunteers to perform various non-law enforcement activities that augment or support the civilian responsibilities of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Background

Established by the MPDC in December 1995, the Auxiliary volunteers support MPDC services and create community services not currently available under existing programs or within the level of available resources. Volunteers sometimes fill in for regular MPDC employees during a temporary absence (provided the volunteer is qualified to perform the assigned duties), or supplement existing employees during periods of heavy workloads and backlogs.

Auxiliaries are allowed to perform only those duties for which they have appropriate training, knowledge, skills, and abilities, and those duties for which they are authorized to perform by Department. Members of the Police Auxiliary Service shall have no police powers and shall, under no circumstances, conduct or represent themselves in a manner that would suggest they have police powers. Volunteers must commit to work a minimum two-hour tour of duty per scheduled day and no less than 16 hours per month. Auxiliaries may work full-time, part-time, or intermittent schedules, and either day or night shifts.

Membership Qualifications

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have a high school education or equivalent, live in the Washington metropolitan area, and have no criminal record, excluding minor traffic violations. Auxiliaries must also be mentally and physically capable of performing the duties assigned to them without unreasonable danger of harm or injury to themselves or any other person. No individual shall be denied an opportunity to volunteer services based on any disability, provided the individual can adequately perform the duties safely and without hazard to him or herself or others.
